The Devon and Cornwall Longwool is a rare, dual-purpose sheep breed known for producing a heavy, coarse, and hard-wearing fleece, with weights of 7-10 kg being common and sometimes exceeding 20 kg. This wool is ideal for durable products like carpets and rugs, as well as crafts and home furnishings. The lambswool is also highly prized for its quality and is often shorn separately.

Wool production

  • Fleece weight: A mature ewe typically produces a fleece weighing 7-10 kg, while rams can produce over 15 kg. Some fleeces have been recorded at over 20 kg.
  • Quality: The wool is coarse but durable, with a Bradford count of 32s-36s and a staple length of about 20-25 cm, or sometimes up to 30 cm.
  • Uses:
  • Carpets and rugs: The hard-wearing quality makes it very suitable for carpets.
  • Crafts and furnishings: It is used for crafts like weaving, felting, and creating home furnishings.
  • Industrial uses: The wool's durability also lends itself to some industrial applications.
  • Lambswool: Wool from lambs is also sought after and highly prized.

Our herd is purely for fibre and therefore live generationally, which is a little unusual. on visiting the farm and meeting them the soil association remarked it was unlike any other farm they had visited "i've never seen sheep run towards the farmer before'
